Macro and Micro Solutions for Managing Your Financial Institution in a Challenging Market: Spread Management, Funding, and Investing Strategies

A Seattle Bank Seminar
This Seattle Bank seminar will be presented by Roy Hingston, senior vice president and chief balance sheet strategist at Shay Financial Services, Inc.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This presentation is designed for directors, CEOs, CFOs, and financial managers who are involved in strategic planning, asset-liability management, funding, and/or investing activities.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Join us to find out about macro- and micro-solutions that can help you address your financial institution’s current challenges:

  • Allocating Assets and Capital
  • Minimizing Funding Costs
  • Navigating Flat, Inverse, and Convex Yield Curves
  • Finding Optimal Funding and Investment Strategies

The first part of our discussion will present a macro-level view of managing spread: “Spread Management: From the Top-Down.” As managers of financial institutions, we tend to use a lot of “peer group” analysis as we plan strategic moves. Perhaps we could benefit from some of the techniques used in other businesses: asset allocation, cost center analysis, and capital allocation strategies. This discussion will review the role of the investment portfolio within the context of an institution’s overall strategy and goals.

In the second part of our discussion, “Making Sense of Today’s Roller Coaster Yield Curve,” we will present a micro-level view of yield curve dynamics, addressing such questions as: What is today’s yield curve telling us about future economic conditions? What are some optimal strategies for managing flat, inverse, or convex yield curves? In this discussion, we will build and test five separate strategies and review their expected economic impacts.
