Fair Value or Unfair Value: Accounting for OTTI in a Distressed Economy
A complimentary Web Seminar Archive for Seattle Bank members.

This Web seminar was presented by Rich Berg, CEO of Perfomance Trust Capital Partners, on March 26, 2009.

What is the “fair value” of your investments in today’s economy? How do you mark a held-to-maturity investment to market value when the market has all but disappeared? How will adoption of the recent FASB proposal on fair value measurement affect these types of investments?

For answers to these and other critically important questions, join Rich Berg for this timely and informative Web seminar. Rich will provide a brief history of fair market value accounting and how it works (or doesn’t work) in a normal vs. a distressed economy. He will also present an interesting discussion of the implications of single- vs. multiple-obligor securities in making decisions about whether or not to impair a particular investment. Finally, Rich will explain the recent FASB proposal and its possible implications for affected investments.

Richard S. Berg is CEO and co-founder of The Performance Trust Companies, where he is also head of the trading desk. Since the company’s inception in 1994, Performance Trust has been educating and working with bond investors. Rich was one of the original faculty members of the firm’s highly acclaimed Bond Math University® and the Advanced Course®. He is the author of several feature articles in the ABA Banking Journal, where he was Contributing Editor for five years, and other banking and regulatory publications. He has appeared on Bloomberg TV & Radio, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox Business News, WLS, WTTW, and Reuters as a guest commentator.
